Two new Skills for Work Courses have been designed and are reaching the final stages of development. Skills for Work Energy (Intermediate 2) and Skills for Work Engineering Skills (Intermediate 2) will be formally launched on 29 April 2008.

Skills for Work Engineering Skills (Intermediate 2)

Skills for Work Engineering Skills (Intermediate 2) has been designed to provide a basis for progression into further education or for moving directly into training or employment within an engineering sector. The overall purpose of the Course is to ensure that candidates start to develop the generic and practical skills, knowledge, understanding and employment skills needed with an engineering sector.

Skills for Work Retailing (Intermediate 2)

A new Skills for Work Course in Retailing (Intermediate 2) has been designed and is reaching its final stages of development towards a formal launch in March 2008. The Course has been designed to provide an introductory qualification in retail which reflects employability skills identified as being important by many employers, including those within the retail sector. The Retailing (Intermediate 2) Course provides opportunities for candidates to develop general and practical skills as well as knowledge and understanding of the key aspects of retailing through providing a broad experiential introduction to the retail sector. Employability skills are key to the Course and there are opportunities to develop them through the activities and tasks built into the Course.

Skills for Work Uniformed and Emergency Services (Intermediate 1)
From August 2008 a new Skills for Work Course in Uniformed and Emergency Services (Intermediate 1) will be available.

To ensure that we can offer centres an appropriate level of support and resourcing, it would be beneficial if you could identify whether your centre is likely to present candidates for this award in session 2008/09.

If you are likely to present candidates, please send the name of your centre and SQA centre number to to Mairi McKinley.

Please be assured that by sending these details you are not committing to presenting candidates. The details will only be used to gauge potential interest in this new Course.

Further details about the launch event in April will follow in due course.

SKILLS FOR WORK SUPPORT NETWORKS

SQA  ran Skills for Work Support Networks during October and November 2007 for centres delivering, or considering to deliver, Skills for Work Courses. These events provided a range of benefits and opportunities including sharing of good practice, discussion and standardisation of interpretation of standards, exemplification of delivery models and sharing of pilot experiences. These events  also covered internal and external Quality Assurance processes and provided centres with opportunities to informally discuss examples of their candidates' evidence with an external verifier.
