Additional Support Needs
Within each school the Support Staff will work with pupils and carers to arrange suitable opportunities to suit the circumstances. The Council's School Handbook provides some helpful information.
A leaflet about Additional Support for Learning has been produced under the terms of the Education (Additional Support for Learning) (Scotland) Act 2004. It provides information for the general public about this Act and the policy of the City of Edinburgh Council. This is available on the Council's main website (see Accessibility Strategy).
All Colleges and schools provide support for pupils with special learning or physical requirements.
If you require additional advice or information, please contact your individual school.
Colleges Response
Edinburgh's Telford College has a dedicated team at the College to support pupils with special requirements and we offer a range of vocational tasters and project weeks which are available on request
Jewel and Esk College also has a specialised team. They offer a number of opportunities which can be negotiated for individuals by their school. There are also a number of 'Headstart' courses offering students the opportunity to gain qualifications at Access level 1, 2 or 3. (These may be appropriate for pupils once they have left school).
Stevenson College too make arrangements to support pupils with special learning or physical requirements
Approaches
The needs and requirements are very individual, so there is not a common set of courses offered.
It is useful to look at the range of subject areas offered to school pupils and discuss possibilities with the Support Teacher at you child's school.
The planning for moving from Special School Education to education beyond school is something which should begin as early as possible.
The experience of working in a supported college environment can be extremely beneficial as it provides an opportunity to sample out-of-school activities related to work.
Support
In addition to each school's Support Staff, who will work with pupils, parents and carers to arrange suitable opportunities to suit the circumstances, there are Careers Scotland staff who offer tailored support to individuals with additional support needs whatever their career aspirations. They will help you to make the most of your skills and strengths when looking at career options. The Careers Scotland link, above, also provides a wide range of information on other web-sites.
